Its been nice not having to watch and review any movies these past 2 days but its oddly weird not having a movie on a list to watch >.< I’ve been busying myself with family tree stuff and writing letters to my friends back home. I’m going to try and sleep as much as I can because once college starts, I doubt I’ll get any sleep for 2 years!

Thanks to anyone who took an interest in my challenge and ever looked or read any of my crap-excuse-for-a-review. Thanks to those who took the time to comment. I hope that my challenge has inspired you to watch a few movies yourself or even your own challenge like Julie Powell did for me.

I’VE DONE IT! I actually managed to watch 212 films in 7 months! BOOYA!! However, I will not feel like I’ve fully completed this challenge until I type up my so-called ‘reviews’. I now have 43minutes to type all four of today’s movies up. Guess I kind of regret not typing up The Shawshank Redemption when I had the chance [I had a nap instead >.<]

Anyways, 3 of these films were amazing, guess which one wasn’t so *eye roll, glares at TheFilmFan* [lol joking, by the way]. Now, seeing as time is short and I now have 41 minutes left, these reviews might be short, brief, bullet points and I may miss some key points, especially in Shawshank, Oldboy and Godfather. At least this time I have a genuine excuse for my crappy reviews! 40 minutes to go!

The Shawshank Redemption

Feel sooo sorry for Andy! Its obvious from the start that he didn’t murder his wife and her lover. It must be terrible to have to go through the ordeal of your wife cheating on you, her death and then being framed for her death and sent to prison.

Morgan Freeman is one of my favourite actors. We first see him walking through a doorway and he out-acts everyone just by walking.

It was horrible when all the new people walked into the prison, the atmosphere just stank of regret and shame. Not a single one of them was proud to be in there.

OMG A MAGGOT’S IN HIS FOOD!!

Red [Freeman] manages to sum up ‘The Sisters’ perfectly in just a few words: Andy: “I don’t suppose it would help if I told them that I’m not homosexual.” Red: “Neither are they. You have to be human first. They don’t qualify.”

Red: “Maybe its because I’m Irish.” LMAO!

Them all drinking ice-cold beer and Andy doing people’s paper work makes them feel like free men; Red: [narrating] “We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders and felt like free men. Hell, we could have been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the lords of all creation. As for Andy – he spent that break hunkered in the shade, a strange little smile on his face, watching us drink his beer.” To be honest, my review could simply be just quoting all of Red’s narration which is some of the finest script writing I’ve ever heard. Also, Freeman has the greatest voice ever!

Its so sad to see that some people are in prison for so long that it becomes there home and they know nothing else. They become so used to it that they can’t survive back in society. These guys may be criminals but you do fall in love with each and everyone one of them [except the Sisters, obviously].

Andy teaches a teenager/young adult basic education and the kid thinks he’s messed it up and screams at everyone. Then, whilst Andy is in the box for a month for [I think] playing music over the tannoy system, its revealed that the kid passed!! YAY!! Then something bad happens.

When your best friend looks suicidal and he’s in the cell down your lane and you can’t do anything to stop him, it would probably be the longest night for you too.

I love that he doesn’t get angry that he didn’t take him with him or told him about it. He’s just so happy that he went. That’s true friendship for you. “I guess I just miss my friend.”

He kept his promise! He went to find the box and went to him! Awwww! Best friends forever!!! Totally made me cry!!

HOPE

209/212

Right, 24 minutes to go!!!! Ahhhh!!!

Mallrats

“One time my cousin Walter got this cat stuck up his ass.” Is the opening line and that’s about as good as the script gets, by the way. It’s a very goofy movie and a cult classic but I wish I didn’t watch it as my 3rd to last movie.

I don’t know why the women are complaining! I’d love to be propose to in front of Jaws at Universal Studios!! But that is coming from the girl who just watched 212 movies lol.

The slapstick is well timed because even though its goofy and all, it oddly works well.

Ben Afleck always makes me laugh. At him, of course, not with him.

Butt hand. So. Unbelievably. Gross.

Stan Lee is in it!! Oh and Earl and Randy from My Name Is Earl!

210/212

21 minutes!!! AHHHH!!!

Oldboy

The movie is Korean and it shouldn’t of been dubbed into English, they should of just stuck with subtitles because it just looks ridiculous and comical dubbed. Also, the tone and acting in the voices don’t match the acting on screen.

The moral of this story is to not loose your drunk friend.

I like the clock opening credits.

OMG!! He has ants in him?!!?

EWWWW!!! He’s sewing his hand!!!!

EWWWWWWWWW!!! He just ate a live squid!!!!

The corridor fight scene was awesome, so well shot and choreographed!

They kidnapped him because they wanted to make him crazy?! Now THAT is a great storyline!! This whole movie has a fantastic storyline but a crap script.

Be prepared for “wait-what?!!?!” moments and some incredibly shocking moments that actually make sense. It’s a very good movie, trust me, you get over the dodgy dubbing quickly.

211/212

17 minutes!!!!!!!! COME OOOOON!!

The Godfather

The opening speech is very powerful, the acting of it, the script, everything was brilliant. And then the scene was made better by the amazing Marlon Brando who got so much better with age!! He’s just mind-blowingly amazing in this film, I genuinely think that even though the storyline is really good, Brando made it work!

The Godfather’s first speech is about loyalty and friendship, themes that continues throughout this movie and the others. “Be my friend?” I know that’s supposed to be a heartbreaking line but it made me laugh.

My dad pointed out that whenever the mob would get together for a funeral or wedding, the cops would arrive and take notes of all the license plates on the cars because then you’ve practically got a list of who’s in the mob.

“My father made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.”

The blooded sheets and the horses head, probably one of the most iconic scenes from this movie. Pretty damn terrifying!

I ended up really loving the Don!! I genuinely didn’t want him to die when he gets shot! I was like “please let him live!!” I don’t know whether this was because I love the character or because I hate Al Pacino’s Michael and if the Don died then it would just be Michael in the movie and I had him in the second movie and he bored me shitless! And he still bored me in this one. I would say that’s the only thing wrong with this movie, the character of Michael. Pacino is a great actor and all but not even he could make the character good.

Louis Italian/American restaurant looks EXACTLY like the restaurant in my home town back in England that we used to go to!!

The fight with Sonny [Don’s son] and the son in law is crap! Its supposed to be all hardcore but it looks like it was done by drama students!!

He got married!?!?! Without his family there?!?!?! Oooooooooo!

It was lovely to see the Godfather cry. And the way Brando did it was perfect for that strong man. Just perfect.

It was some brilliant casting when it came to Michael’s son. He looks just like Pacino!

This is going to give it away a little but whatever, I don’t care with 8 minutes to go!! Anyways, I love that the Godfather died playing with his grandson rather than assignation. And then the next scene is the Christening, death and birth. And with the most beautiful baby EVER!! Then it got even more awesome with the editing when Michael is asked if he renounced Satin and the it cuts to all these murders happening, it was just perfect!

212/212

Kate
Xoxo

DONE!! WITH 7 MINUTES TO SPARE!!! WOOOO!!

Its my last day of the challenge!!! I watched Shawshank Redeption this morning [which was brilliant] so that’s out the way and I shall review it at some point today along with the last 3.

I knew that Laura and my cousins and Auntie flying over from England to spend a couple of weeks with us was going to set me and my challenge back so its amazing that I only have to not watch 2 movies because there wasn’t enough time for them to get here. So I won’t be watching Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back or Raiders of the Lost Ark. I asked around on Twitter and I got two new movies that people have recommended.

I shall watch ‘Oldboy’, recommended by filmthreat [via Twitter] and ‘Mallrats’ by TheFilmFan [also via Twitter]. So, I shall watch them two then my final film of the Godfather which DID arrive here on time. Lets hope I can finish them all by 11.59pm tonight!!!

FINGERS CROSSED!

I had my new friend Karyn over to watch these two with me. We discussed them, exchanged funny comments and so on. Its nice watching movies with friends, I’ve really missed it! Anyways, I’m going to use Karyn as an excuse for my reviews being short and crap because she distracted me from my note-taking!!! Both films neither of us had seen before which was good.

Goodfellas

There is serious stabbing at the beginning so don’t eat.

The casting is brilliant, especially the casting of the characters when they were young. Also, Robert De Niro is still awesome even when he wears huge glasses that make his eyes look like Pokemon eyes.

The storyline is all true, about gangster mobs and loyalty and everything. Its very well written. It shows the 3 big things about mobsters; be loyal, be respectful, and be violent. Also, its very obvious how the whole system works in regards to new ‘recruits’; they find young boys/men who have crap or no father figure and then become their father figure and therefore have loyalty. Don’t be disrespectful as it just leads from one death to another and to another.

The jail scene is infuriating because there gangsters, who commit the worst crimes of all, manage to buy their way into an easy prison sentence and it turns into a quiet holiday with steaks and whisky.

Karyn got really into this movie, to the point where one of the main characters dies and he’s so annoying and deadly to everyone [he doesn’t care who he kills or by what means] that Karyn breathed a sigh of relief when he was killed. To get the audience that involved takes great writing and acting skills, something this movie definitely does not lack.

207/212

Jaws

I jumped once and Karyn jumped twice. It is THAT good.

The iconic music. Its amazing that 2 notes can be so famous and strike so much fear!

Spielberg seems to be like me in making this movie; he loves silhouettes. This movie is a perfect example of how nature’s sky and a blacked-out human being can be the most beautiful thing ever.

I love that the fear is there from the beginning as someone is attacked within the first couple of minutes.

The body covered in crabs, the first “OMG ew” of the movie, there’s about a million more after that.

I never thought that a piece of dock would scare me so much!

Was the shark caught? Hell no! Why do we know? Because there’s still over an hour left of movie!

Once again, Karyn got really into this movie, we both did but Karyn actually cheered when the shark died and clapped when it turned out the other guy was still alive.

And then we watched Jaws in 30 Seconds By Bunnies which we were still laughing at and recieting about an hour after we’d watched it. I think you should watch the bunnies one too, as well as this movie and Gooodfellas.

“You yell shark and we’ve got a panic on our hands on the 4th July.”

“This shark could swallow you whole.”

“My boy is dead.”

“We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

“Show me the way to go home.”

“I used to hate the water.” “Can’t imagine why.”

208/212 – 4 TO GO! ALMOST THERE!

I’ve been trying to delay my viewing of this because its one of my mum’s favourite movie and I wanted to watch it with her. Have you ever watched someone when they’re watching a movie they love? It’s a beautiful sight to me.

Anyways, this is one of the best ‘old-black-and-white’ movies I’ve seen, I wasn’t bored for one minute, its fast paced for a noir movie and the storyline is very interesting; a guy flies over to Venice [post-World War II, its separated into 4 different zones run by winning allies] for a job with his best friend only to find out he’d died. It all seems too fishy though so the best friend goes on a little investigation. It really made me think about what I would do if it were my best friend, Sarah.

Its directed by Carol Reed which is the name of my mum’s best friend!

The music is so weird for a noir movie! Its all happy whilst the scenes are very serious. Its very unique and just about works.

Awww! His BFF, Harry, told everyone about his, Holly’s, book!

The little boy is such a little cutie!!!

I love that most of the non-English characters spoke in their native tongue and without any subtitles. Sometimes Anna, Harry’s girlfriend, would translate as she speaks fluent English which is believable. I’ve said it before that I hate it when the characters are, for example, German but they speak to each other in English with a ‘German accent’. Also, you’re probably wondering why it was good there was no subtitles; I feel it was good because we see it almost completely from Holly’s point of view; he doesn’t understand what they’re saying so neither do we.

Orson Welles is fantastic in this, he was truly an amazing actor. I love that this movie was written so that we only saw Harry at the end yet he is ‘present’ throughout.

I’m going to say another two things about this movie but it will spoil the end if you have never seen it before so I’d recommend you don’t read on unless you know what happens!

————————————

I was so happy when Harry was revealed to be alive! And what a reveal is was! Anna saying the cat only liked Harry and then we see the cat by someone’s shoes then Harry’s face is revealed by the window opening and lit hitting his face. I really love the smile Harry, Orson Welles, gives Holly. it’s a cheeky smile but it also felt like an ‘I’m-alright-don’t-worry’ smile. The way the whole movie was shot and written is very clever because we’re all lead to believe that Harry was dead and because of all the dodgy people and stories, we think he’s probably been murdered.

Would you shoot your best friend if they were on the run for diluting penicillin and causing sick children/people to stay sick? I know I couldn’t. I’d had them in to the police but I couldn’t shoot her. I don’t know why Holly did it but I guess no one can fully know what they’re going to do in that situation till they’re IN that situation which I hope I, and you, are never in.

206/212 – 6 TO GO!!!!

I’ve been dreading reviewing this because I knew it was going to end up being a long review that I’m just too tired to write. This is because it is such a freaking awesome movie. The beautiful cinematography, mind-boggling editing, the acting, the storyline and the characters are all perfect in the sense of great movie making. Obviously, the storyline and characters are due to the book [which I shall put on my reading list] but… I don’t know, its just amazing. This film is kind of like Marmite, you either love it or you hate it. I love it. My brother loves it. I remember he saw it for the first time when me, him, our mum and uncles were on holiday in Wales and my uncles had brought their portable DVD player and some DVDs and he just watched Fight Club on repeat for the whole week. Yes, he enjoys it because of the fighting and he loves Brad Pitt but I think, unbeknownst to him, that its more than that.

This movie is a little like Donnie Darko in the sense that you have to watch it a few times to understand it or even have a grasp at understanding it. The first time you watch it, you’re shocked and confused by the ending. The next time you watch it, knowing the ending, and realizing how brilliant it all is. Next time you really think about the morals of the movie. Then the next time you realise there are even more themes. You discover something new every time you watch it and I doubt you can say that about any other movie [except Donnie Darko].

I’m not going to really talk about the technical side of this movie because not only will it bore you but I actually can’t put it into words. Its just so amazing and inspiring and fresh. Its unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. The editing and the cinematography are characters of their own. I… I honestly can’t say anything, I just don’t know what to say so I’ll end it at that. Its just spectacular.

Actually… to talk about the storyline and characters would really turn into a book review. If you are going to watch this movie for the first time then I’d recommend you don’t look anything up about it, I’d stop reading this and just watch the movie. Don’t find out about the twist at the end or it will all be ruined. Actually, not, that’s a total lie because I know the twist and have seen this movie another 5 or so times and I’m still discovering stuff. But its nice the first time you watch it and you don’t know what’s going to happen. I kind of miss that ignorance.

Ok, I lied, I’m going to say a few little things about the editing and cinematography but I’ll try to keep them short; look out for Pitt as he is everywhere. The narration is throughout and it works perfectly, its really needed. I like it when the narrator talks about being a consumist and we see his apartment come together like an Ikea catalogue with everything priced [I, personally, love being a consumist, I like buying pretty and funny things]. There is a brilliant moment when they’re talking about Pitt’s character’s past and his previous jobs, its shot like a documentary and our narrator [Edward Norton, and the narrator doesn‘t have a name] is our host and reacts to Tyler [Pitt] who is… its like the narrator has gone back in time and stuff… its hard to explain but its one of my favourite parts. If you don’t like the fighting and look away, there is no point looking away during the Jared-Leto-gets-beaten-to-a-bloody-pulp scene as it is worse to hear it than it is to see it. Sorry, I’m done now, shutting up.

I’ll do a few little comments about the storyline and characters even if they’re not really due to the movie because it’s a book. Anyways. Who knew you could make bombs out of soap! And who knew that soap was human fat! The 1st rule of Fight Club is don’t talk about Fight Club. The 2nd rule of Fight Club is don’t talk about Fight Club. The scene where the narrator beats himself up in his boss’s office to make it look like his boss beat him up is hilariously sad. Priests like to fight. I love the homeworks that Tyler sets people and one of them being feed a bunch of pigeons on the top of a big car shop and have them poo all over the new, expensive cars. Its amazing how subtly Tyler raises an army [In Tyler We Trust].

This movie will make you think about life. Tyler’s ‘motto’ or way of life is that once you have nothing to loose, then you can start living life. It’s the whole ‘best things in life are free’ stuff. I agree with that and all, I mean the best things in life are friends and family but bought things don’t hurt. The thought that we need nothing is stupid. Its good to buy things. Its good to own a piggybank in the shape of a cupcake. Its good to spend money on a poster to hang on your wall. Its good to spend a little extra on something you will love forever, like a stuffed toy or a piece of jewelry. I’d say that having nothing almost restrains you more than having something. [/end of philosophical crap here]

I haven’t done this in a few reviews so I’ll finish this one off with the best speech of the movie and the funniest line of the movie, all delivered brilliantly by Brad Pitt.

“Hi. You’re going to call off your rigorous investigation. You’re going to publicly state that there is no underground group. Or… these guys are going to take your balls. They’re going to send one to the New York Times, one to the LA Times press-release style. Look, the people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances. We guard you while you sleep. Do not… fuck with us.”

“WHOA! WHOA! WHOA! Ok, you are now firing a gun at your ‘imaginary friend’ near 400 GALLONS OF NITROGLYCERINE!”

205/212

Kate
Xoxo

My 4th film today. 3 tomorrow then 4 Saturday. I think I might actually complete my challenge. I shall celebrate by eating popcorn all day Saturday.

I thought there was no point doing three separate posts as I pretty much watched these movies back to back to save time. I have one more film to watch tonight and it will probably be Fight Club which I will review separately.

Pulp Fiction

This was the film I was always shamed to say I hadn’t seen. I can see why its a cult classic and many people’s favourite. It’s incredibly well made thanks to the wonderful Quentin Tarantino. I only made a few notes as I couldn’t really find much to write about but oddly enough, I still thought it was really good.

I know the opening song/theme tune! So it’s THIS movie that it’s from!! It turns out that I knew a lot of the iconic things in this movie but just didn’t know it was from this movie, if you know what I mean. Like, for instance, I now know that John Travolta’s stupid, ugly long hair was from this movie! And Samuel L. Jackson’s weird afro type thing. Also that iconic dancing ‘twist’ scene! *hangs head in shame* I’ve just never had the opportunity to watch this movie before.

I love the style of the storytelling, seeing it from different people’s points of view but it never stops. Sorry, back explanation but I like that the point of view changes from Samuel L. Jackson/John Travolta to just John Travolta then to Bruce Willis then back to Samuel L. Jackson/John Travolta. It keeps it fresh and different.

I didn’t like all the drug snorting and injecting. Hate it hate it hate it! Gives me the heeby jeebies.

OMG BRUCE WILLIS SHOT JOHN TRAVOLTA!!!!

202/212

Apocalypse Now

I’m a little sick of Vietnam movies, just like I’m sick of Westerns. However, for some reason, this Vietnam movie was different and didn’t make me completely bored and rolling my eyes all the time. I suppose because it’s a little different from the rest because I actually cared about the characters in this one and it wasn’t just simply ‘I hate the war, I’m so depressed, I want to go home’ crap that is most Vietnam movies but it was about hunting down an American who had gone insane! Now THAT is different because it finally showed that Americans aren’t perfect!!

The opening explosions made me think of Tropic Thunder: “Mother Nature just pissed her pants!”

I love that there is no CGI in this movie! It’s all real! It’s not that I’m anti-CGI, it’s just I love movies more when they’re actually real. But I think its safe to say that it was probably Vietnam movies that caused Global Warming.

I want some mangoes.

Awww! It has little 18-year-old Lawrence Fisher in it! He’s a scrawny little thing! Then he turned into Morpheus! Anyways, his death [sorry to give it away] is so incredibly sad because you can hear his mother’s tape in the background talking about him coming home and getting a car and grandkids. So heartbreaking.

I loved that this movie doesn’t put Americans in an all good light. It showed that there were a lot that didn’t take it seriously and just acted like it was a giant holiday with a chance to kill people and take LSD and smoke weed. Then they’re high and light up their boat for the enemy like a bloody gay pride parade.

Marlon Brando’s character is wanted for murder. In a war. Seriously.

OMG CUTEST PUPPY EVER!!! And yet we never know if it lived or not. I hope it did. It was an Andrex puppy, the cutest of them all.

The entrance to Do Long Bridge was some amazing piece of cinema. It showed the true horror of war. You had these people begging and pleading to go on the boat so they could leave this land, it’s so horrible to hear. Then they land and the base looks and sounds like an evil, dead circus. I think I remember the main character saying that the people in charge were like clowns and they were going to bring the whole circus down.

Charlie Sheen [before he went crap] was in Platoon and he looks so much like his father [Martin] did in this movie, the resemblance is uncanning.

EWWWW! THE HEAD IS ON HIS LAP!!!

The lighting of Marlon Brando is amazing because it helps show the insanity of the character with the face gradually shown and never on full display and such.

203/212

Taxi Driver

I love Robert De Niro but it’s not just him that makes me love this movie, the whole thing is amazing. I don’t know exactly what it is… the cinematography, the acting, the storyline, everything! It’s an incredibly well made movie, I will definitely watch it again. I knew it was going to be good within the first minute with the opening entrance of the taxi with the smoke and the camera angle and the music! An incredible entrance for an automobile.

Its got Frank from Everybody Loves Raymond in it!! RIP Peter Boyle!!

De Niro is really handsome in this movie! And his character is lovely and cheeky. It’s such a shame that he’s a loner. And crazy. But he is a sweetheart when it came to Betsy but I think it would have turned ugly if they’d been together because of his mental instability.

Martin Scorsese is the [fantastic] director and he’s in it too! He’s one of Travis’s [De Niro] passengers and a really important character because I think he’s the one that gives Travis the ‘lets go murder some people’ idea. Scorsese and De Niro in the same car is acting overload!!! Also made me want to watch Shark Tale.

Ewww! I hate spit and veins, those are the two things I can’t look at in movies [oh, and spiders!]. When Travis gets fit and then there’s a shot where he clenches his fist and all his veins show ewwwww!!! I’m getting all cringy just thinking about it!!

“You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me?!”

I don’t like his mohawk. He looked much better before.

One of the ending shots, where it pans through the building is something I’ve seen before because we watched it when we were doing Shocking Cinema in film studies. It is pretty shocking, what with the walls practically repainted with blood and guns everywhere. I oddly like this part but I have no idea why. I’m not some weirdo that likes seeing blood but it just worked well with the rest of the movie.

I read somewhere that there are theories that the last scene[s] of the movie may not be real, and may be either what Travis is dreaming of in prison or his dying dream. It kind of reminds me of The King of Comedy where we didn’t know whether he really did become a celebrity of if he was just thinking it. Those endings are great because it leaves you thinking and to give your own interpretation rather than the director saying “here’s how it ends, tada.”

I’ve never seen the last 10 minutes of this film! I’ve seen the rest a couple of times but never the ending, how weird! Anyways, I watched this with my dad as this is one of his favourite movies and its nice to watch a movie with someone who loves it. I think I don’t love it as much as my dad because of the time difference and I’ve been completely spoilt with sci-fi/CGI movies that I wasn’t impressed by it. Well, I say that but I can appreciate that back then [1982] it was pretty amazing and, actually, I was impressed by the landscape parts, where we see the ruin that is now LA. It does make you wonder whether we’ll all be living in constant smog and rain in 9 years time [the film is set in 2019].

I can tell it was filmed in the 80s because even though the cars can fly, they have 80s computer screens. Also, everyone is dressed so over-the-top futuristic but with 80s hair. Ooo except Rachel, the love interest, because she’s dressed up like someone from the 50s, its so pretty and retro! She looks kind of like Katy Perry meets Dita Von Teese.

The voiceover is incredibly cheesy and the script is awful! The storyline is good and that’s all due to the book but the actual script itself is terrible. Thankfully there isn’t much script. The music is cheesy too, all the jazz sounds sound like a really bad ‘love scene’ from a crap movie!

The lighting, on the other hand, makes up for a lot of it. There is something about the lighting in this movie that is amazing and I think its that that helps us get the actual feeling of futuristic. It sets the mood, the location, even the history because sometimes they’re like search lights giving the impression that something terrible happened there.

Harrison Ford might not be the word’s greatest actor but he has the world’s greatest lop-sided grin.

Sorry, don’t get me wrong, it’s a good movie but I’ve seen better *runs away* It might also have something to do with the fact that the first time I saw this was in history class so its a little bit tainted with bad memories!
